Pioneers of photography in Romandy
01.09.2020 - 10.01.2021
Ubiquitous today, photography was a prodigy in the eyes of those who first discovered its wonders in 1839. And as every object of fascination, it also garnered its fair share of critics, who attempted to strip the practice of any artistic value. Through daguerreotype — unique images developed on a silver surface — then calotype and similar processes that allowed unlimited reproductions to be made on paper, photography opened itself to all possibilities and became a medium for all aspirations. In Geneva as in other French-speaking Cantons across Switzerland, the novel technique sparked considerable interest: people set about reproducing and sharing images of people, monuments, works of art and nature itself. They captured picturesque views, exceptional scenes and the changing times. Through the remarkable collection gathered by Michèle and Michel Auer at their Geneva-based foundation, Maison Tavel spotlights the diverse approaches of all photography pioneers from Romandy, French-speaking Switzerland.
